Inflation Calculator (CPI)

Inflation Calculator (CPI)

See how much a dollar amount from any year is worth in any other year — using official U.S. CPI-U annual averages from 1913 to 2025.

The inflation calculator shows how much a dollar amount from one year is worth in any other year, using the official U.S. CPI-U annual averages published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Enter an amount, pick a starting year, and pick a target year — the calculator instantly converts the value in both directions.

You get three numbers at once: the inflation-adjusted equivalent (what your money buys in the target year), the cumulative price change between the two years, and the average annual inflation rate over that period. Try $100 in 1990 vs. today, or compare any two years from 1913 through 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the inflation-adjusted value calculated?
The calculator takes the CPI-U annual average for each year and applies the ratio: adjusted value = amount × (CPI of target year ÷ CPI of starting year). If the index rose from 130.7 (1990) to 321.9 (2025), a $100 bill from 1990 is worth about $246 in 2025 dollars.
What is CPI-U?
CPI-U is the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers, the U.S. government's standard measure of the average change in prices over time. It covers about 93% of the U.S. population and is the basis for most official inflation statistics.
What is the difference between cumulative and annual inflation?
Cumulative inflation is the total price change across the whole period (e.g., prices rose 146% from 1990 to 2025). The average annual rate is the equivalent steady yearly rate that would produce the same result — for that period it works out to about 3.3% per year.
Why are the 2025 values based on annual averages?
This calculator uses full-year CPI-U annual averages, which are the standard figures for comparing whole years. For the most recent year (2025) the annual average is 321.9. Monthly figures fluctuate, so annual averages give the most stable comparison.
