Roman Numeral Converter

Convert any number from 1 to 3999 into Roman numerals — or decode Roman numerals back into plain numbers. Live, both directions.

A Roman numeral converter translates between ordinary Arabic numbers and the numerals used across the Roman Empire — and still everywhere today on clock faces, movie credits, book chapters, and Super Bowl logos. Type 2026 and get MMXXVI, or paste a Roman numeral and see its value instantly.

The converter works in both directions live: enter a whole number from 1 to 3999 and it builds the correct Roman numeral using standard subtractive notation (IV, not IIII), or type Roman letters like MCMXCIV and it decodes them to 1994.

Everything runs locally in your browser — nothing is uploaded, and there is no signup. Handy for schoolwork, engraving dates, quiz answers, or settling arguments about what year MMXXVI actually is.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert a number to Roman numerals?
Work from largest to smallest: 2026 = 2000 (MM) + 20 (XX) + 6 (VI) = MMXXVI. The converter applies the same greedy method instantly, using subtractive pairs like IV (4) and CM (900).
Why is 4 written as IV and not IIII?
Standard modern notation uses subtractive pairs: place a smaller numeral before a larger one to subtract it. IV = 5 − 1 = 4, IX = 10 − 1 = 9, and XC = 100 − 10 = 90. Clocks sometimes still show IIII for tradition.
What is the largest number I can convert?
In standard Roman numeral notation the maximum is 3999 (MMMCMXCIX). Larger numbers traditionally used a bar over a numeral to multiply it by 1000, which this converter does not support.
Is there a Roman numeral for zero?
No. The Romans had no symbol for zero — the concept arrived later with the Hindu-Arabic numeral system. That is why the converter starts at 1.
